Origin: Africa

Properties: Famed for its black finish, the strength of ebony is well known. After seasoning the wood needs little maintenance due to the oils it contains. Ebony is endangered. Exotic woods are bought from responsible timber yards to ensure that the woods supplied are not directly affecting deforestation.

Other facts: Traditionally used for black piano keys, ebony is also used in string instruments including guitars and cellos. It was also used for chess pieces and even in the handgrips of early pistols.
