Properties: A narrowly interlocked grain that ranges in colour from a rose to a deepish purple. As is it two-and-a-half times stronger than oak it is difficult to work the wood by hand.
Other facts: Frequently used in musical instruments, including violin bows and organ pipes. It is also used in boatbuilding for its impressive durability.
